The Island: Grand Cayman is a small island about 20 miles long
and 10 miles wide. 90% of the activities and entertainment are centered
on the west end, along the famous 7 Mile Beach and West Bay road.
Getting there is easy. Many shops and restaurants are within a
half mile walk. Downtown Georgetown is about 3/4 of a mile way or
about a 15 minute walk.
Getting Here: Grand Cayman is a short flight
from many popular US Hubs. Many flights leave each day from Miami,
Houston, Atlanta, and Orlando. We live in Michigan and it takes
about 4 hours in the air. The island is about 90 miles south of
Cuba and 500 miles southwest of Miami, Florida.
What to expect: When you arrive at
Georgetown Villas you will find a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea
and a peaceful oceanfront & courtyard view right from this comfortable
vacation home. This home is great for either a couple or a family.
Inside this condo we have a fully
equipped kitchen, dining table for 8, comfortable seating with TV and
DVD and sleeping for 8. The master bedroom has a king size bed with a
full bathroom. The second bedroom has a single bed and a bunk that has a
double bed on the bottom and a single on top to accommodate 4. The
second bedroom also has a full bath. The living room couch pulls out
into a queen size bed where 2 more can sleep. If you have a little one
with you, we have a portable crib and a highchair.
We will provide a cell phone with
‘pay as you go’ minutes. Minutes can be purchased close by. Wireless
internet has been installed if you travel with your notebook. There is
also a stereo with CD player and radio, washer and dryer, ironing board
with iron, beach toys and beach towels. Do you enjoy a good book on the
beach? There is even a good case full of those along with games for fun
after a day in the sun.
Groceries: If you leave the property and head
out to the main road, turn right and walk about 1/3 mile. You will see
Kirks grocery store on the other side of the street. We walk there just
about every day and just buy what we want that day. Along the way you
will also see a bakery. If you'd like to buy the groceries in advance of
arriving, you can buy on line and have everything waiting for you when
you arrive
http://www.caymanshoppers.com/. They charge for delivery but if you
really don't want to deal with shopping, its a good alternative.
Dining: There are
absolutely wonderful restaurants on the island, but too many to name
them all. There is fine dining at the Wharf, Ristorante
Pappagallo, The Reef Grill, Lobster Pot, Hemmingway’s, and The Great
House. With our family of 6 we enjoy the more casual dining. If you want
to adventure toward the east end of the island there are more to enjoy
including Lighthouse at Breakers.
Some of our favorite island restaurants (most can be
walked to) include the following:
Cimboco Great
pasta and pizza go to main road and turn left about 1/2 mile behind
the Pizza hut and gas station
Coconut Joes fun outside bar food go to main road and turn left
about 1/4 mile
Lone
Star Grill fun outside bar food main road, turn left about 1/2
mile
Paradise Restaurant By The SeaLunch by the sea in the
downtown harbor where the cruise ships come in. Bring your snorkel
gear as its a great place to snorkel too
Treasure Island - Billy Bones restaurant bar by the pool.
Lunch by the pool and the kids can swim while you eat. main road turn
left 1/4 mile. Its in the middle of the treasure island hotel
Cobalt Coast
Restaurant Best dive shop on the island. Dive, Lunch and the kids
can swim while you eat. You'll need a car as its on the north end of
the island past the Turtle farm
Stingers Restaurant/bar at the Comfort Suites pool. Go to main
road and turn left about 1/4 mile in the back of the Comfort Suites
hotel (other side of the road from Coconut Joe's).
The Club House
New sports bar outside of Treasure Island. We were there for the first
time this August for the first time and was impressed with the food
and service.
Many of these can be visited without a car, though
you may find a car necessary to visit the turtle farm and and other
attractions that are further down the beach. There is also a city
bus system composed of small vans that have a large colored dot on the
windshield, for about 2 dollars you can go anywhere on 7 mile beach.
Activities: Some of the things our family and other
events our guests have enjoyed include:
Scuba Diving DiveTech has been
our favorite shop for years. Nancy and her staff has always taken good
care of my kids on both boat and shore dives.
Downtown George Town is the busiest
shopping area on the island. Jewelry, watches, coral art, island art are
just a few of the treasures you can find in these stores. It can
be a busy place while the cruise ships are in port but the discounts get
better as the ships leave.
There are
also many stores up and down the 7-mile beach area that have great buys
too. You will find jewelry, art, dive gear, island keepsakes and more.
The island attitude is very laid back and relaxed,
nothing is done in a hurry. If you're looking for something a bit slower
paced, just sit back and soak up the sun!
